Minister K.Gerhards represents the EU at the Petersberg Climate Dialogue
On 17 - 19 May, 2015, Mr Kaspars Gerhards, the Latvian Minister for Environmental Protection and Regional Development, representing the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union will pay a visit to Germany in order to participate at the sixth meeting of the Petersberg Climate Dialogue.

During the multilateral meeting high-level officials from different countries will hold a discussion on the international climate change negotiations towards reaching a new global agreement on post-2020 climate change mitigation at the Paris Climate Change Conference in December, 2015. Therefore, this year’s Petersberg Climate Dialogue takes place under the slogan "Reaching for the Paris outcome".

Likewise, the high-level officials will exchange views on how to balance all elements of the agreement as well as on the principles and resources available for implementing the agreement. Another important focus for this year’s discussion will be on the Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (hereinafter – INDC) and their significance in accordance with the new agreement in order to ensure a sufficient amount of INDCs.

On behalf of the EU and its Member States, on March 6, 2015 the Latvian Presidency to the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate (UNFCCC) submitted a submission on the INDC.  The submission confirms that the EU and its Member States are committed to a binding target of an at least 40% domestic reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to 1990.

The Petersberg Climate Dialogue takes place since 2010. It plays a complementary role by offering countries an informal forum for high-level political discussions on current issues of international climate policy. This year the event will include representatives from 35 different countries, including the Federal Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel and the President of the French Republic François Hollande.
