Minister K.Gerhards will participate in CITIES Forum 2015

On 2 June, 2015 the Latvian Minister for Environmental Protection and Regional Development Mr Kaspars Gerhards will participate in CITIES Forum 2015 that takes place in Brussels, Belgium. CITIES Forum will be dedicated to the development of an Urban Agenda for Europe.

The CITIES forum 2014 revealed a clear demand for an European Union (EU) Urban agenda from stakeholders across the EU. To better understand how it could be set up and work, the European Commission launched a public consultation. It is planned that the Commission will present the results of the consultation.

During CITIES Forum there will be an opportunity for stakeholders at local, national and European level to exchange views on the development of Urban Agenda.

Issue on Urban agenda is one of the Latvian Presidency priorities in the field of sustainable urban development.

The Latvian Presidency is actively working to provide their contribution to the development of Urban agenda, by preparing the assessment and promoting discussions on small and medium-sized cities, their challenges and potential.

As a result of these discussions and series of evaluation, Latvia has prepared a Declaration. This Declaration provides general framework for promotion of  EU Urban agenda and recognizes the crucial role of small and medium-sized urban areas on territorial development. This political agreement is expected to provide guidelines for the various parties involved in further work on the development of Urban agenda.

It is expected to approve the Declaration at the Informal Ministerial Meeting on Cohesion Policy and Territorial Development on 10 June 2015.
