| Latvia will litigate over the EC assigned total amount of emission quotas for 2008 – 2012 at court |

On July 31, in the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, “The Informative Report on Emission Quota Distribution Plan 2008 – 2012”, elaborated by the Ministry of the Environment, was approved.
The informative report prescribes elaboration and submission of claim statement on litigation of the EC Decision of 13 July 2007 No. K (2007) 3409 on amendments to state greenhouse gas emissions quota distribution plan 2008 – 2012 at the European Court of First Instance till 26 September 2007 by the Ministry of Justice in collaboration with ministries of the Environment, Economics and Foreign Affairs. The informative report also determines amendments to Emission Quota distribution plan 2008 – 2012 to be elaborated and submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers by the Ministry of the Environment in collaboration with the Ministry of Economics till 15 November 2007.
The EC decision increases the annual permitted amount of emission quotas on 0, 15 million, thus increasing the amount of emission quotas stated in the EC decision of 29 November 2006 from 3, 28 to 3, 43 million.
To be reminded, the average amount of annual emission quotas in the Emission Quota distribution plan 2008 – 2012, approved by the Cabinet of Ministers on 28 December 2006, Directive No. 1010, is 6, 25 million.
At present, claims at the EC Court of First Instance are pursued also by several other European Union member states – Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic and Estonia.
