The Presidency of the Council of the EU

The Presidency of the Council of the European Union rotates among the EU member states every six months. During this six-month period, the Presidency chairs meetings at every level in the Council, helping to ensure the continuity of the EU's work in the Council. The EU Council is an essential decision maker which together with the European Parliament (EP) adopts legislation and coordinates EU policies.

The Presidency chairs meetings at every level in the Council, driving forward the Council's work on EU legislation and fostering the cooperation among Member States, thus, ensuring the continuity of the EU agenda and achievement of common goals. To do this, the Presidency must act as an honest and neutral broker.

The Presidency has two main tasks:

  • planning and chairing meetings in the Council and its preparatory bodies;
  • representing the Council in relations with the other EU institutions.

The Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union took place during the first half of 2015. Latvia took over the Presidency from Italy and passed it to Luxembourg.

Involvement, growth and sustainability were three main principles in the programme of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the EU.

The Latvian Presidency focused on three overarching priorities:

  •  Competitive Europe;
  •  Digital Europe;
  • Engaged Europe.
