On 9–10 October 2025, the Minister for Smart Administration and Regional Development, Raimonds Čudars, is participating in the informal meeting of the European Union (EU) Ministers for Telecommunications in Denmark. The agenda includes policy discussions on creating a safe online environment for children and young people, age verification mechanisms on social media, and strengthening Europe’s technological sovereignty.
Minister Raimonds Čudars stated: “I approach these issues not only as a policymaker but also as a parent. Protecting children online is one of the most important digital security challenges across Europe. The internet offers many opportunities for children and young people, but it also brings risks. To improve safety, we need a unified European approach – technological solutions, education, and common standards across all platforms.”
The meeting will include discussions on how to introduce effective and privacy-preserving age verification mechanisms in the digital environment. Minister Čudars will emphasize that platforms must ensure a high level of privacy and security, while also fostering the development and coordinated implementation of innovative technical solutions at the EU level. He will also stress the importance of maintaining an ongoing dialogue between policymakers and the technology industry to establish common principles, allowing service providers to adapt solutions within their systems.
As examples, Minister Čudars will highlight the European Commission’s age verification application and the European Digital Identity Wallet – tools that will allow users to verify their age securely and with full respect for privacy.
Minister Čudars will further note that Latvia actively supports media literacy and digital skills development, especially among children and young people, and endorses the Jutland Declaration, which sets out the core principles for building a safer online environment for minors.
