APTITUDE Project – Towards a Reliable and Unified Digital Identity in Europe

APTITUDE (Advanced Project for Trusted Identity Technologies and Unified Digital Ecosystem) is an ambitious pilot project supported by the European Commission, involving 118 partners from 11 EU Member States and Ukraine, coordinated by the French Ministry of the Interior. The project's goal is to develop and test the European digital identity ecosystem, with a primary focus on the development of the EU Digital Identity Wallet, which will ensure secure, interoperable, and user-friendly identity management across the European Union.

APTITUDE builds on key European Commission initiatives, including Regulation (EU) 2024/1183 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 April 2024 amending Regulation (EU) No 910/2014 as regards establishing the European Digital Identity Framework, as well as previous large-scale pilot projects (DC4EU, EWC, NOBID, POTENTIAL). The pilot project aims to support Member States in preparing the infrastructure necessary for the implementation of the EU Digital Identity Wallet by the end of 2026.

The APTITUDE pilot project will focus on the following use cases for the EU Digital Identity Wallet:

  1. Digital travel documents – secure identity verification while traveling, including tickets and check-ins at hotels, public transport, etc.
  2. Mobile vehicle registration certificate – digital access to vehicle data.
  3. Payments and banking services – strong customer authentication and efficient payment execution.

The project will develop standardized protocols, technical documentation, and interoperability frameworks to promote collaboration between the public and private sectors. Special attention will be given to regulatory compliance, technical stability, and effective communication to raise awareness of the benefits of the EU Digital Identity Wallet across various industries.
